A message from the Interim Superintendent/Principal

Greetings to the Community of Vista Del Mar Union School District and Vista de Las Cruces School!

My name is William Banning, and I have been selected by the Board of Trustees of VDMUSD to serve as the interim Superintendent/Principal for the district and school to fill in for Dr. Handall, who was selected near the end of last year to be Superintendent of Guadalupe Union School District.

I retired at the end of June 2017 after five successful years as the Superintendent of Goleta Union School District. My career in public education began in 1978 as a junior high school music teacher. I’ve worked as a computer teacher, as an elementary and junior high assistant principal and principal, a district human resources leader, an assistant superintendent and superintendent. Coming back to work this year to support the Vista community seemed like a great idea and a good way to continue supporting the excellent public school education in Santa Barbara County.

So, what does it mean to be an “interim” Superintendent/Principal? Typically it means that an individual (often retired)  will take a position for a short time period while the Board recruits and selects a new leader. In Vista’s case, the Board has an interest in keeping an interim leader in place for long enough to assure a smooth start to the school year and keep things going while they explore the best options for responding to budget challenges that lie ahead.

As a retired educator, I am allowed a limited amount of time to work in the school system. As a result, I will be working at the school part time, overseeing the school and district while relying on the support of a designated “Teacher in Charge” to make sure day-to-day school operations run smoothly. I will likely be present at the school one to two days a week when classes are in session. In my absence, the Teacher in Charge as an administrative designee will have authority to serve as the acting principal (with certain limitations). I will always be available through mobile communication and in case of emergencies. There are no final decisions about who will serve as the administrative designee in place, but you’ll hear more details as they become confirmed.

I’ve heard great things about the Vista Del Mar Union School District, Vista de Las Cruces School, and the people who call this their home - I’m pleased to be part of the community, even on a part-time basis. I’m looking forward to meeting staff as the summer break winds down, and all the scholars and parents on the first day of school. I’ll be out on the campus as the day begins. Please stop by and introduce yourself.
